Site-Seeing in Chicago

June 2nd - My Sister (Karen), Brother (Dave), Sister-in-Law (Beth), and I took a day-trip to Chicago and met up with my Niece (Sarah - who is one of Dave and Beth's daughters). We started by taking a short walk through Chinatown, then went to the Pheonix restaurant for Dim-Sung...a Chineses dinner that consists of ordering all sorts of dishes in smaller quantities. As everyone might guess, I AGAIN ate too much.
After our stop in Chinatown, we headed to the Navy Pier area of Chicago so we could walk along the pier and take a the architecture boat tour down the Chicago River. - - - As we got to Navy Pier and saw the "Captain on the Helm" statue, Sarah decided she'd needed to take over the helm. To prove her worthiness, she even gave a Pirate's arrrrrrrrr. (We didn't argue with her but the statue did put up a little bit of a struggle!)

Obviously there was a slight favoritism noted around town for the Chicago Black Hawks, who were ready to play game 3 of the Stanley Cup.
Here are a variety of pictures taken on and around the pier...including the huge ferris wheel.

As one also might expect, there was memoribilia around the city for Harry Caray, the famous Cubs announcer.

As we left the pier area, Sarah and I decided to play with the kids in the park. Even though the children didn't talk much, Sarah seemed to be OK with it. Me on the other hand, needed some counseling...so I layed back to talk to a Shrink. However, even "Bob Newhart" wouldn't talk to me so my image of being liked by most everyone has been severely damaged.

While I've been afraid to look in a mirror since I began the trip (due to the massive quantities of food I've been eating), I got brave and stepped in front of the "Fun House's" mirrors. To my surprise, the food didn't appear to have gone to my waist. Instead, it had simply stretched my torso. Not sure which would have been better, but I did notice that when I took the picture, I also captured the long torso of my Sister (same mirror as me), and my Brother's slightly longer legs (mirror on left). (Dave and Karen - No need to thank me for the flattering picture!)

There were lots of good pubs and restaurants on the pier, and we stopped at "Billy Goats" and had a couple beers, and "horny goats" to quench our thirst.
One of the many things I've enjoyed on this trip are images on the water. While I knew I wanted to get a couple shots of the lighthouse, the "Pirates Ship" was nice and pulled up for a perfect combined picture.

While not quite as nice as the lighthouse in "Peggy's Cove" (in Nova Scotia), it does look pretty nice. Didn't get a picture of the Vette in front of it, since it was still parked in the garage in LaPorte. (Just couldn't fit all 5 of us in the Vette.)

Now back to the boat tour and seeing some of the Chicago skyline upclose and personal. - - - Sarah is on the left in the 1st picture, and the 2nd picture shows a rose between 2 thorns.

Thought the picture on the left (with the reflections) was pretty awesome. The picture on the right shows what is still the tallest building in Chicago, and WAS the tallest building in the world for a short period of time...previously known as the Sears Tower.

More shots of the Sears Tower. - - - Note the platforms near the top of the 2nd picture. These are observation decks where people can walk onto them, and look straight down. (NOT me!)

On the left...one of the many different types of water taxis used. On the right, the "Elevated Train," which is referred to as the "L."

On the left is the "Merchandise Mart." Not only is this building big enough to have it's own zip code, I actually worked there a couple times when I was in high school. I used to work at a place that made hand-crafted picture frames and pottery.

The building below is the NBC tower...and the 2nd picture shows the peacock on the side of the building.

While not much to look at, the open space in the foreground of the 1st picture is where Chicago plans to build what is supposed to be the tallest building in the world. - - - The 2nd picture shows the John Hancock building in the clouds.

These next 3 pictures show contrasting weather...the day of our trip...and the day we went to the Cubs baseball game.

Hope you enjoyed.
